Documentation shows that around the third century BC, an official deed showed the sale of a wine vineyard of one hectare proving evidence of viticulture in the Ragusa region. Soils are mostly clay and limestone, with more sandy-loamy soil in the lower-lying vineyards closer to the coast. One can feel the deep history and roots here.

More than half of all the vineyard areas in the Mosel, Rheingau, and Mittelrhein are planted with Riesling. VDP is not part of the official German wine law.

Melrose Vineyards is located on the bench of the South Umpqua River where once stood an early French Settlement. Melrose Vineyards’ owners (Wayne and the late Deedy Parker) arrived in 1996 to make Umpqua Valley Wine. The original vineyard of 82 acres was planted in the summer of 1996. Though typically served with dessert, this wine could pair with foie gras and even scallops. Built in 2003, the winery overlooks beautifully maintained vineyards and is filled with new, state-of-the-art, and expensive looking equipment. The next morning, I arrived at the beautiful winery she shares with her sister Laura.
