Working together, Italo and Sergio replanted the vineyards and restored the farmstead. I had the pleasure of spending an afternoon with Sergio a few months ago at a winemaker luncheon for a vertical tasting of six Rocca delle Macie’s historic cru wines made exclusively with grapes grown in their Fizzano estate vineyard.

Working together, Italo and Sergio replanted the vineyards and restored the farmstead. The vineyards have an excellent southern exposure at 985-623 feet above sea level and the mild Mediterranean climate contributes to maintaining the balance of the grapes acidity, sugar and aromas. Aged two years in French oak.

You still get a lot of that strong oak influence, but it’s not quite as sweet. The wine is aged in “French oak, which is a little bit more of a modern take for Rioja,” adds Wines. “It It really does the wine a lot of favors. You get a lot more vanilla and baking spices. It just adds a lot of great complexity.”
