A New York Times article from 1886 reported that porters could work 37 hours straight, make $16 a month, and have to pay for their own uniforms ($18 a piece) and meals. A Crescent line menu from the 1980s offered wines from vineyards along the route. Butler, of the RPA, says that the inequality was just as bad inside the dining room.
