Burger King goes Hollywood with launch of 'Spider-Verse' Whopper on a red bun

The limited-time promotion ties into the movie release of Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse, coming to theaters in June.

“Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse” comes to theaters June 2, but Burger King is getting a jump on the movie’s release with the launch of the “Spider-Verse” Whopper May 15.

The newest take on the Whopper features the iconic burger tucked into a red bun sprinkled with black sesame seeds—red and black are Spider-Man’s signature colors. The patty is topped with melted Swiss cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, mayo, pickles and white onion slices. The limited-time item is available through June 21.

Joining it as an LTO this summer is the “Spider-Verse” Sundae, a combo of soft-serve ice cream topped with black and red popping candies. Burger King is co-promoting both with Sony Pictures Animation, the movie’s producer.

“Like the infinite number of universes that can be explored in the next installment of the award-winning Spider-Man franchise, Burger King fans can discover new and exciting ways to customize the ‘Spider-Verse’ menu items,” Pat O’Toole, CMO of Burger King North America, said in a statement. “This co-promotion allows us to bring the best of both worlds together, creating countless possibilities for guests to have it their way and rule their Spider-Verse.”

Starting Monday, Burger King is also planning Spider-Verse takeovers of select global restaurants. Units in Astoria (Queens), N.Y., France, United Arab Emirates, Brazil and other locations will sport interactive designs that immerse fans in an action-packed Spider-Verse in both the dining room and drive-thru. The decor also includes Instagrammable areas for photo opportunities.
