Michelin Announces 2021 Stars for Hong Kong and Macau

Just days after a coronavirus outbreak prompted Hong Kong’s first severe lockdown, Michelin forged ahead with its latest dining guide announcement for Hong Kong and Macau. As has been its chorus throughout its international guide rollout, Michelin maintains the awards will help elevate and support these dining scenes “amid the demanding landscape for hospitality businesses.” Said Gwendal Poullennec, the international director of Michelin guides: “The 2021 edition is a celebration of the courage and creativity of the restaurant industry and its commitment to serving local communities as well as medical staff.”

In a virtual ceremony, the French tire company’s fine dining aficionados revealed 10 newly starred restaurants, including two new two-star restaurants and eight new restaurants with one star.

Tate Dining Room, a French-Chinese restaurant from chef Vicky Lau, was elevated to the two-star category. Lau is the only female chef with a Michelin star in the guide. L’Envol, a French fine dining restaurant in the St. Regis Hong Kong, was also bumped up to two stars this year, giving Hong Kong a total of 12 two-star restaurants, while Macau has six. There are no new three-star restaurants, but seven restaurants in Hong Kong and three restaurants in Macau hold on to their status.

In the one-star category, the new additions include seven Hong Kong restaurants and one from Macau. In Hong Kong, yakitori restaurant Yardbird and Cantonese restaurant the Chairman, both Eater essentials, get their first stars; they round out a list of new one-star restaurants populated primarily by Japanese and Cantonese cuisine. In Macau, Cantonese restaurant Wing Lei Palace is the only new one-star restaurant, bringing the region’s total to nine one-star restaurants, compared to Hong Kong’s 50.

The guide also includes two sustainable Green Star restaurants, one each in Hong Kong and Macau: Roganic in Hong Kong and IFT Educational Restaurant in Macau. Both grow their own herbs and greens, but only Roganic has a regular Michelin star.
