Eater San Francisco Is Looking for a New Editor. Is It You?

The site is on the hunt for a new leader

Eater San Francisco is looking for a lead editor to head up its coverage of restaurants and food culture across the Bay Area. Over the past year, the site has covered a range of narratives: how California’s wildfires impacted Napa and Sonoma counties’ wineries and restaurants to the continued push for Black and Asian unity in Oakland Chinatown, from deep-dives into the Bay Area’s obsessive quesabirria culture to countless stories of restaurants opening, closing, and pivoting throughout the pandemic. The scope of food and restaurant coverage has never been broader, and Eater SF is keenly interested in a range of issues: from big philosophical questions, to how Big Tech is imprinting neighborhoods, and where workers’ rights stand amid an ongoing industry reckoning.

Eater’s ideal candidate will have extensive editing and reporting experience, along with a clear strategy for defining who and what matters in the Bay Area food world. They will be obsessed with the idiosyncrasies of the Bay Area’s food culture, restaurants, and neighborhoods, and they will tell stories that acknowledge the complexities of the restaurant scene across San Francisco and the East Bay — whether unpacking the tangibles of change and equity within the industry or ensuring that Eater SF’s maps speak to the Bay Area’s diverse communities. The editor in this role will manage a small team of editors and reporters; work with that team to develop and execute a grounding vision for the site; be a leading voice in conversations around the Bay Area’s restaurant scene; and conceptualize, assign, edit, write, and report original stories and features that speak to the communities that comprise the Bay Area.

If all of this sounds exciting, head over to this Vox Media job posting and follow the instructions, including providing a cover letter and a resume. This is a full-time Vox Media Union position, represented by the Writers Guild of America, East, with excellent benefits.
