Santé in August is as hot as ever!

Our lead story is from Penny Weiss, who brings us back to Sicily, where she tours the Donnafugata winery and estate. Founded in 1983 by Giacomo Rallo, he inspired a new generation of modern winemaking in Sicily. The Donnafugata name is synonymous with creativity as represented in their art and literature-inspired labels, lead by Gabriella, Giacomo’s wife. It is also a company that has invested heavily in sustainable viniculture. You will enjoy this read as Penny explores various regions of Sicily and highlights some of the wines that you will want to collect for your own private exploration of the areas.

Drew Beard takes us on an in-depth tour of A. Smith Bowman, Virginia’s oldest distillery. He covers how Master Distiller, Brian Prewitt, guided the company to prestigious awards and an ever-growing line of products. With over 500 experiments in place, Prewitt is directing A. Smith Bowman to continue to innovate in the spirits field.

Jake Leonti of F+B Therapy tells us why coffee is like wine and why it is not! He discusses terroir and the relative effects on coffee by the grower, the roaster, and the barista.

Melanie Young delivers a restaurant profile from Yannick Benjamin. Yannick and his partners opened his first restaurant, Contento NYC. Located in East Harlem, the 40- seat restaurant’s social mission is to offer accessibility to all and encourage inclusivity. Learn how Benjamin’s own disability inspired him to found Contento.

In her Chef and Mentor column, Melanie Young brings us the fantastic story of Leeann Chin’s. Leeann rose from working as a seamstress to impressing the likes of actors Sean Connery and Robert Redford with her cooking. These relationships helped her develop a 30-restaurant conglomerate in Minnesota. Also, see one of Leeann’s last recipes before she passed away.
