The Dozen – Riveting rosies

Whether from Provence or elsewhere, today's pinks are fruity and crisp.

As surely as there are bouquets of pink roses for Mother’s Day, the run for the roses occurs annually at the Kentucky Derby and we experience the inevitable pink spring sunburn, there will be lots of pink wines making their annual debuts in the coming weeks.

Increasingly, everyone from Provence to Paso Robles is also getting the message – keep it lightly fruity, keep it crisp and keep it simple – simply stupendous.

BTW, the placid photo above is from Talley Vineyards on the Central Coast. In addition to the rosés, we have a couple of the Talley table wines as well.

2022 Domaine Bousquet “Chameleon” Tupungato Valley Chardonnay ($15). Clean, pure apple flavors, lightly creamy with nice raspy acidity.

2022 Talley Vineyards “San Luis Obispo” Chardonnay ($38). From a venerable Central Coast producer, nice apple flavors and fairly good structure and a slightly sweet, fruity finish.

2023 Louis Jadot ($17). Lots of clean strawberry flavors, lightly creamy and lightly chalky, with good closing acidity.

2023 Gassier Côtes de Provence Rosé ($20). Very refreshing with good fruit essence – sweet herbs, citrus peel, wild strawberries and a lean finish.

2023 Montes “Cherub” Valle de Colchagua Rosé ($20). Very fresh textured flavors of ripe and almost-ripe strawberries – very refreshing.

2023 Aix Côteaux Aix en Provence Rosé ($24). Lovely fruit aromas and light, creamy orange flavors with some minerality, medium body, crisp finish.

2023 Minuty “Prestige” Côtes de Provence Rosé ($24). Very nice, with fresh orange and strawberry tastes, a hint of cream, but balanced by piercing acidity. Not too long on the palate, however.

2022 Domaine Bousquet “Danaus” Costers del Segre Red Wine ($13). From Spain, with enjoyable mellow blackberry flavors, some minerality, lots of dusty tannins.

2021 Domaine Bousquet “Chameleon” Tupungato Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($20). Light, creamy black raspberry flavors with some good savory notes.

2022 Talley Vineyards San Luis Obispo Coast Pinot Noir ($46). From a cooler district, this Pinot has lovely aromas, elegant cherry fruitiness and a tangy finish.

2021 Lithology Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($150). An excellent wine with rich and deep blackberry and cassis flavors, very structuredwith lots of tannins and some chocolate notes – one to drink now or for the cellar.

2010 Kopke White Colheita Port ($53). If you are serious about wine, then you should at least try aged white Ports. This one, very affordable for the category, has viscous texture and honeyed flavors. Sip chilled with cheeses and fruits.

Prices listed are generally SRP or from wine-searcher.com. As more wineries are now shipping direct-to-consumer, check the winery website if you can’t find a bottle in your retail store.
