With the option of posting videos to your story or on your page on Instagram, it can be difficult to decide whether you want your video to be temporary or permanent.
Here are a few questions to ask yourself to help you decide.
1. Is the video personal?
Depending on how you feel about followers always being able to rewatch a more personal video, you may or may not want to post it permanently.
If the video pertains to a major personal milestone, you may wish to post the video permanently to revisit it. Meanwhile, if the video is more of a check-in or quick update, perhaps a story post would be better.
It’s important to keep in mind that anything that is posted on the internet is out there forever, regardless of if it is only up for 24 hours.
So, be confident in what you post!
2. Is the video timing-sensitive? (to a product launch, event, etc)
Posting online content is all about timing. Therefore, timing also affects whether your video should be on your story or not.
For example, if you are releasing a hype video for a product launch, you may wish to have it up for only a day to increase buzz and intrigue.
Whereas the day of its launch, it would be better to post the video permanently as a constant ad.
3. Do you want followers to be able to share the video with their friends?
Another thing to consider is how shareable you want the video to be.
It is much easier for everyday Instagram users to share page posts as opposed to story posts. The send button is obvious and right under a scrolling thumb.
Stories also have a share feature, but it is slightly more hidden. The viewer has to click on the video (while not skipping to the next section of the story) and the share button is at the bottom right corner.
4. Would it be more effective to post the video in both formats?
While the original question posed was an either/or, there is a secret third option of posting to BOTH your story and your page.
Many businesses do this, particularly involving product launches.
Some users don’t watch Instagram stories while others look there first before looking at their feed. Posting to both locations ensures that no matter how followers prefer to interact with your account, they will see your launch announcement.
Whether your video will be temporary or permanent will impact where you post your video on Instagram.
By answering these questions, you can decide where you want to post and then can plan accordingly for future videos.
