Amid restaurant awards confusion elsewhere in the world, the Michelin guide carries on. The latest list of stars from the French tire company focuses on Guangzhou, China. It’s the third Michelin guide for the Southern Chinese city.

In the 2020 Michelin guide to Guangzhou, there are two restaurants with two stars and 10 restaurants with one star, with one restaurant in each category appearing there for the first time. Imperial Treasure Fine Chinese Cuisine moved up from the one-star to two-star category this year. The restaurant is one of a chain of fine dining restaurants in Asia and Europe; a Shanghai location also has two stars, while locations in Singapore and Hong Kong have received one star. In Guangzhou, the restaurant joins Jiang by Chef Fei, which maintains its two-star rating from last year.

Lingnan House, the new one-star restaurant, makes its Michelin guide debut. It opened in October 2019 inside Guangzhou’s Rosewood Hotel, which advertises itself as the tallest hotel in mainland China. There, it serves Cantonese cuisine from an open kitchen.

Throughout the pandemic, Michelin has maintained that forging ahead with its dining guides will help support cities’ restaurant industries during this time. On the occasion of the Guangzhou guide, Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin Guides, says: “Despite the exceptional year we have been through, our inspectors continued to scout the city, being both touched and impressed by the resilience of so many chefs and their entrepreneurship in overcoming the crisis and helping to shape a safe and lasting recovery.”

The Michelin guide to Guangzhou also includes 31 Bib Gourmand restaurants, including five new additions, and 46 Michelin Plate restaurants. Below, the full list of Guangzhou’s Michelin stars.
